Episode 4 — What Is a Stock Price?
Understand what the number beside an ASX share actually represents.
What Is a Stock Price?
A stock price is the current market price at which a share can be bought or sold.
A Share Represents Ownership
When you buy a share, you are buying a small ownership interest in a company.
Think of Shares as Pieces of a Business
Imagine a company divided into millions of small pieces. Each piece is a share.
The market gives each piece a price that changes over time.
The Price Changes
A share price does not normally stay fixed. It moves as buyers and sellers interact in the market.
Buyers and Sellers
At its simplest, market price reflects the interaction between people willing to buy and people willing to sell.
More Buying Pressure
If buyers become more aggressive and sellers are willing to sell at higher prices, the traded price can rise.
More Selling Pressure
If sellers become more aggressive and buyers are only willing to pay lower prices, the traded price can fall.
Price Is Not the Same as Value
A share trading at $100 is not automatically more valuable than a share trading at $10.
Market Capitalisation
Market capitalisation estimates the total market value of a company's outstanding shares.
For example, $5 per share with 100 million shares would imply a market capitalisation of $500 million.
Why Technical Analysts Care About Price
Technical analysts focus heavily on how price behaves over time.
A Price Chart Records History
A chart allows you to see how the market price has moved over a selected period.
Price + Time
A chart normally shows price on the vertical axis and time along the horizontal axis.
One Price Isn't the Whole Story
Technical analysts usually study a sequence of prices rather than looking at one number in isolation.
That sequence tells us much more than simply saying the share is trading at $27.
🇦🇺 Australian Market Example
Imagine an ASX-listed company trading at $8.00. Over several weeks its price rises to $9.50, pulls back to $8.90 and then moves to $10.20.
🧠 Chart Detective
A share moves from $10 → $12 → $14 → $13 → $16.
🏆 Episode Takeaways
• A stock price is the market price of a share.
• Prices change as buyers and sellers interact.
• Price is not the same thing as company value.
• Technical analysts study price movement over time.
• One price tells you less than a complete price history.
Every time you look at an ASX share quote, you will see a number such as $5.20, $28.75 or $142.30. This number is the stock or share price.
But what does it actually mean?
A stock price tells you the market price of one share in a company at a particular point in time. The price can move up and down as buyers and sellers interact in the market.
For someone learning technical analysis, understanding stock price is essential. Price is the starting point for almost everything you will study later — trends, support and resistance, chart patterns, moving averages, momentum and breakouts.
